Gambit Redesign by DanielGovar Gambit Redesign by DanielGovar
At Heroes Con 2013 I had the pleasure of being on a Project Rooftop panel on redesigning superheroes. It was a lot of fun and the guys who submit and work on that site are uber talented. For the panel, we were asked to redesign the character of our choosing to be discussed at the panel, and I chose Gambit.

For the redesign connoisseurs:

My approach was to list words that I associate with the character, and things I like about his current and classic look - the aspects that Make Gambit, Gambit at first glance. I wanted to keep that grifter, slick, suave, sexy, roguish personality and at the same time, modernize him. His old hobo coat had to go, as it's just too tough to do sexy in that thing, and for a character that exudes style and panache, it just wasn't in that coat. I went with a sleaker biker style jacket - side zipper with slanted zip pockets and flared sleeves (for cards). I kept his color scheme though I made his jacket a darker shade, gave him alligator skin boots, a full-house belt buckle, card pouch, and a staff that unscrews into two pool sticks (you never know when you'll have to strike up a game!) The "X" over the heart is two-fold, he's a lady-killah!

This redesign is perfect.  I can't say that that the character has ever had a good costume and even the iconic Jim Lee look isn't all that good.  This however gives the character something he has lacked for many years: a well-thought-out look that's properly designed and tells you want the character is about.  Even if I had no idea who this character was, I would be able to guess that he's a professional rogue or ne'er-do-well of sorts.  The slightly flared leather pants, snake-skin boots, and ornamented belt are the strongest give-aways, though the tattoo also helps cultivate that image.  I like the shirt and the 'x' on it.  Very elegant and simple as well as a creative way of squeezing in an X-Men motif.

Also it's sleak.  No arbitrary armour, piping or other things that seem like they were tossed in.  The jacket is short and not bulky, which suits the character's image and profession perfectly.  It also shows a bit more skin and reveals more of his body, which makes sense.  For a character as a cocky and vain as Gambit, his costumes always seemed weirdly confining and asexual.  This is the kind of guy who would show off.

Well done Mr. Govar.  :)

Wow, I am drooling....Sorry, I like Gambit a lot, because he is not try to be a good one at all cost. When I open your deviantion I am afraid that i would not like at all your version. Even if I can complain about the outfit (only for one thing), I like the boots, even the jacket (I like his coat but in a modern version I prefer your choice) and I love that, also in your modern version, he wears the gloves. I always thought that he had to use archer gloves when he focuses his power in the cards, I really like archer gloves, for not reason I suppose, but in a way they are sexy.
Last, but not least you really, really capture his personality, his sexy, violet (ahhh, I love the violet, I am drooling again....) gaze, sometimes sharp sometimes tricky. Good choice the hairstyle without any (classic) band around the head.
Thanks for the gift, great character choice, I hope you will repeat again this project experience!

The most intelligent et effective redesign of Gambit I've ever seen. Though I admit I don't see a lot of Gambit redesigns out there... Great work again !
This panel must have been a lot of fun. ;)
